The first vote I ever cast was in the 1988 California Democratic Presidential primary. I voted for Jesse Jackson. I was proud to do so. I was a radical. I organized protests against the South African government at track meets of all places. In November of 1988 I voted for George Bush for President.

I’m not bought. I’m not ideologically compromised. I spent 30 years in the conservative movement. I even got to work in Washington D.C. for a bit. I saw the hypocrisy up close. It cured me of ideological poisoning. I’m back to my radical roots; not as a Democrat/Progressive/Leftist nor as a Republican/Conservative/Right winger but as a Christian and an American. I’m not a middle of the road type who won’t take a side. I do take a side - my side.

I’m proud of my roots as an American black with all of the rights and wrongs that implies. My family tree is filled with entrepreneurs, hustlers, rustlers, pimps, scholars, artists, sailors, and officers. I’ve seen the race game played at the professional and amateur level. I’m a reliable guide for you through the B.S.

At The Talley Sheet you will learn some of my story as I parcel it out. You will also get honest commentary and hopefully a few laughs. I never write or talk about things I know nothing about. I’ll expose my ideas and my psyche but hopefully never my ignorance.

The avatar I use for this site is a painting titled BANG. It is one of my favorite paintings from my favorite artist, Kerry James Marshall. If you can feel the pathos in the painting you’ll vibe with The Talley Sheet. That is as simple as I can say it. Even if you don’t, stick around anyway. I’m telling you things you ought to know.

My name is Wendell Talley. All views on this Substack are my own and not to be affiliated with any entity you might want to petition to fire me. I put my name on this site because if/when the mob comes for me I’m going out the way I came in - with the name my momma gave me.
